How to Secure the Best After-School Time Slots for Music Lessons This Fall

It’s July in West Michigan, and the sun is shining over Holland, Zeeland, and our beautiful lakeshore. While you’re likely thinking about beach days at Tunnel Park or grabbing ice cream downtown, there is a "hidden" deadline fast approaching that every busy parent needs to know about.
If you are planning on starting your child in music lessons for the upcoming school year, the time to act is right now.
Every year, like clockwork, we see the "September Scramble." Parents call us in late August or early September, once the school sports schedules and bus routes are finalized, only to find that the most convenient time slots: those "golden" hours between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM: are already gone.
At Avalon Music Academy of Holland, we want to help you beat the rush! By starting lessons this summer, you aren't just giving your child a head start on a new skill; you are securing your family’s sanity for the entire school year.

The "Prime Time" Gold Mine: Why 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM Fills Up Fast
We all know the feeling of the school-year juggle. You have soccer practice in Zeeland, a dance class in Saugatuck, and a grocery run in Holland, all while trying to get dinner on the table. For most families, the only time that truly works for
private music lessons is immediately following the school day.
These after-school slots (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday) are the most sought-after real estate in the music education world. Because we are the Lakeshore’s largest music academy with over 1,000 students, these spots are the first to be claimed.
When you wait until the week before Labor Day to call us, you might find yourself choosing between a 7:30 PM slot (when the kids are tired) or a Saturday morning (when you’d rather be sleeping in or at the farmer’s market). By starting now, you lock in that 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM spot today, and it remains yours when the school bell rings in the fall!

Use Summer as Your "Pilot Period"Starting music lessons can feel like a big step. Will they like the piano? Will they "click" with their guitar teacher?
Summer is the perfect "pilot period" to test the waters without the added pressure of homework and exams. When a student starts in July or August, they have the mental bandwidth to focus on their new instrument. They can build a foundation of technique and learn the basics of practice without being burnt out from an eight-hour school day.
This "head start" means that by the time September rolls around, your child isn't a "beginner" anymore: they are a "musician." They already know their teacher, they know the routine, and they are excited to keep going. They’ve already conquered the hardest part (the beginning!), making the transition into the school year smooth and stress-free.

Avoid the "Settling" TrapWhen the fall demand spikes, families who waited often have to "settle" for whatever is left. This usually results in one of three scenarios:
  1. The Late-Night Slot: Trying to teach a 7-year-old voice lessons at 8:00 PM on a Tuesday is a recipe for tears (for both the child and the parent!).
  2. The Weekend Sacrifice: Giving up your Saturday morning to drive to lessons when you’d rather be enjoying the weekend.
  3. The Teacher Waitlist: If you have your heart set on a specific, highly qualified teacher with college training, their schedule may already be completely full by September.
You have nothing to lose by starting now! At Avalon, we offer month-to-month lessons with no long-term contracts. If your schedule changes or you need to adjust, we are flexible. But if you don't have a spot on the calendar, we can't protect it for you. Secure your spot today to ensure you get the teacher and the time that fits YOUR life.

The Avalon Advantage: Why Families Choose UsSince 2004, we’ve been the trusted choice for families in Holland, Zeeland, Saugatuck, and Grand Haven. We aren't just a place for lessons; we are a community. Here is why over 1,000 students call us home:
  • Most Technologically Advanced Rooms: Our lesson rooms are equipped with full drum kits, amps, keyboards, and computers. We use technology to make learning fun and relevant for today's kids!
  • Qualified Professionals: Our teachers are either college-trained or have extensive professional performance experience. Most importantly, they take joy in sharing their passion with the next generation.
  • The Parent Lounge: We know you're busy! Our spacious lounge features comfortable seating and observation windows so you can watch your child’s progress while you catch up on emails or relax.
  • Free Recitals: We believe music is meant to be shared. We offer free recitals with no participation fees, giving students the chance to shine on stage without the extra cost to parents.
  • Flexible Scheduling: We are open 6 days a week, offering morning, afternoon, and evening lessons to fit any schedule: including daytime options for homeschoolers and retirees!

Don't Forget the "Summer Slide"We often talk about the "summer slide" in reading and math, but it happens in music, too! If a student stops playing for three months, they often spend the first two months of the fall just relearning what they forgot.
Starting or continuing through the summer keeps those musical muscles active. Whether your child is interested in drums, strings, bass, or brass and woodwinds, keeping the momentum going is the fastest way to see real results.
