From Rhythm to Fractions: How Music Lessons Boost Math Skills

Hey there! I’m Rich Burkholder, the owner here at Avalon Music Academy of Holland. If you’ve ever sat at the kitchen table helping your child with math homework and felt that familiar sense of "math dread" creeping in, you aren't alone. Math can be tricky, abstract, and: let's be honest: sometimes a little boring for a kid.
But what if I told you that the secret to aceing that next fractions test isn't necessarily more flashcards, but more... music?
At our music academy in Michigan, we see it every day. A student starts piano lessons or picks up a pair of drumsticks, and suddenly, their logic and problem-solving skills start to skyrocket. It’s not magic: it’s science! Specifically, it’s what Dr. Anita Collins calls "The Music Advantage."
In her book, The Music Advantage, Dr. Collins explains how music is essentially a "full-brain workout." Today, I want to dive into why music lessons are the ultimate math hack for kids and how we use these principles right here at Avalon Music Academy of Holland.
The "Full-Brain Workout": Why Music is DifferentMost activities we do engage specific parts of our brain. If you’re reading, you’re using your language centers. If you’re playing sports, you’re using your motor cortex. But when a child plays an instrument, it’s like fireworks going off in their head!
As Anita Collins points out, music is one of the few activities that requires the left and right hemispheres of the brain to communicate simultaneously. The left brain handles the logic, the counting, and the structure (the "math" side), while the right brain handles the creativity, the emotion, and the expression.
When your child sits down for piano lessons in Holland, MI, they are strengthening the "bridge" between these two halves (the corpus callosum). This enhanced communication makes the brain more efficient at processing information, which is exactly what you need when you're tackling complex long division or algebraic equations!

Rhythm and the Great Fraction ConnectionLet’s get into the nitty-gritty: how does rhythm actually help with math?
At its core, music is math that you can hear. When a student learns to keep a beat, they are performing a series of rapid-fire division and multiplication problems without even realizing it.
Think about a standard measure of music. In a 4/4 time signature, we have four beats.
  • A whole note = 1
  • A half note = 1/2
  • A quarter note = 1/4
  • An eighth note = 1/8
When a student is learning drum lessons, they aren't just hitting things: they are calculating fractions in real-time. They are learning that two eighth notes "fit" into the space of one quarter note. They are learning how to divide a whole into smaller, equal parts.
This direct link to fractions and division is one of the most powerful benefits of music education. Research has shown that kids with high rhythm skills tend to have significantly higher math scores. By the time they see fractions on a chalkboard at school, they’ve already "felt" them in their hands and heard them in their ears. It’s no longer an abstract concept; it’s a physical reality they’ve mastered through song!
Pattern Recognition: The Language of LogicMath is often described as the "study of patterns." From the Fibonacci sequence to basic multiplication tables, math is all about recognizing how numbers relate to one another.
Music is exactly the same. Whether it’s a repeating chord progression on a guitar or a melodic scale in voice lessons, music is built on patterns.
When a student learns a scale, they are learning a sequence of intervals. For example, a major scale always follows the pattern: Whole Step, Whole Step, Half Step, Whole Step, Whole Step, Whole Step, Half Step. Recognizing these patterns helps children develop a "mathematical mind." It trains their brains to look for sequences, to predict what comes next, and to understand the underlying structure of what they are seeing.
At one of the premier music schools in Holland, our teachers focus on helping kids see these patterns. When a student realizes that a song is just a series of recurring shapes and sounds, they gain the confidence to look for those same shapes and patterns in their math and science textbooks!

Spatial-Temporal Reasoning: Seeing the SolutionOne of the coolest concepts in The Music Advantage is the idea of spatial-temporal reasoning. This is the ability to visualize how different objects and shapes fit together in space and time. It’s the skill engineers use to design bridges and the skill kids use to solve multi-step word problems.
Instruments like the piano or the violin (check out our string lessons for more on that!) are incredible for developing this skill. A pianist has to look at a sheet of music and instantly translate those vertical and horizontal dots into physical distances on a keyboard. They are "mapping" the music in their mind.
Studies have shown that even just six months of music lessons can dramatically improve a child’s spatial-temporal reasoning. This means they get better at visualizing math problems, which is a huge advantage when they hit geometry and calculus later in life.
