From "Chopsticks" to Chopin: What to Expect in Your First 6 Months of Piano

So, you’ve finally decided to take the plunge and start piano lessons? That is absolutely fantastic! Whether you’re a parent looking to start your five-year-old on a lifelong musical journey or you’re an adult finally chasing that dream of playing your favorite pop songs or classical masterpieces, you’ve come to the right place.
At Avalon Music Academy of Holland, we believe that the first six months of piano are some of the most exciting, rewarding, and: let’s be honest: occasionally challenging months you’ll experience. But don't worry, we’re here to make every single note fun!
One of the most common questions we get from new students is: "What will I actually be able to play after six months?" Will you be ready for the grand stage at Carnegie Hall? Maybe not quite yet. But will you be able to sit down at a holiday party and impress your friends with a recognizable tune? Absolutely.
Let’s walk through what those first 180 days look like when you join our musical family.
Month 1: Getting Your Bearings (and Finding Middle C!)The first month is all about discovery. If you’ve never touched a piano before, the keyboard can look like a giant sea of black and white keys. Your teacher: one of our incredibly qualified instructors: will start by showing you the "geography" of the instrument.
You’ll learn how to sit with great posture (no slouching allowed!) and how to hold your hands like you’re holding a small orange. This might feel a bit silly at first, but it’s the foundation for playing fast, beautiful music later on.
In these first few weeks, you’ll likely:
  • Identify the patterns of two and three black keys.
  • Find Middle C (the "home base" of the piano).
  • Play your very first simple melodies using just a few fingers.
  • Start using our tech-advanced lesson rooms! We use modern tools and apps to make learning note names feel like a game rather than a chore.

Month 2: The "Both Hands" BreakthroughBy month two, the initial "newness" has worn off and the real fun begins. This is usually when students start the "brain workout" of playing with both hands at the same time.
It sounds intimidating, right? Your left hand wants to do exactly what your right hand is doing! But our teachers are experts at breaking this down. You’ll start with very simple "parallel" patterns, where both hands move together, before slowly branching out into independent movements.
This is also where our Musical Achievement System starts to shine! At Avalon, we don't just teach; we celebrate. As you master these early milestones, you’ll earn rewards that track your progress. It’s a huge hit with our younger students (ages 5 and up), but honestly, our adult students love seeing that tangible proof of their hard work too!
Month 3: Reading the Language of MusicYou’ve probably seen sheet music before and thought it looked like secret code. By month three, you’ll be well on your way to cracking that code.
Instead of just memorizing where your fingers go, you’ll start learning to read the Treble Clef and Bass Clef. You’ll learn about:
  • Quarter notes, Half notes, and Whole notes: These tell you how long to hold a sound.
  • Time Signatures: The heartbeat of the music.
  • Basic Intervals: Recognizing the distance between notes so you can read music faster.
Because we keep things friendly and casual, we don't dump a massive textbook on you. We integrate theory into the songs you actually want to play. Want to learn a bit of a Disney theme or a recognizable radio hit? We can help with that! Check out our piano lessons page to see how we tailor our approach to you.

Month 4: Dynamics and Expression (Making it Sound Like Music!)There is a big difference between hitting the right keys and actually playing music. Around month four, your teacher will start pushing you to add "color" to your playing.
You’ll learn about Dynamics: playing piano (soft) and forte (loud). You’ll learn how to use a crescendo to build excitement in a song. This is the stage where "Chopsticks" starts to transform into something that sounds sophisticated.
One of the best parts about Avalon is our month-to-month flexibility. We know life happens! If you’re a busy parent or a professional with a shifting schedule, you aren’t locked into a long-term contract. This low-pressure environment actually helps students progress faster because they’re playing because they want to, not because they’re forced to!
Month 5: Building Your RepertoireBy the five-month mark, you’ll have a small "setlist" of songs you can play from start to finish. This might include:
  • A simplified classical piece (maybe a bit of Bach or Beethoven!).
  • A popular folk song or holiday tune.
  • A "challenge piece" that you’ve been working on for a few weeks.
At this stage, you’ll also be spending more time in our tech-advanced rooms, perhaps recording yourself to hear how you’re improving. Hearing a playback of your own playing is one of the fastest ways to get better, and our setup makes it easy and fun!

Month 6: The Milestone MomentYou’ve made it half a year! By now, the piano feels like a friend rather than a giant machine.
At the six-month mark, many of our students are ready to:
  • Read grand staff music with much more confidence.
  • Play with hand independence, where the left hand provides a beat while the right hand plays a melody.
  • Understand basic chords, which opens the door to playing lead sheets and pop music.
This is often the time when students start thinking about their first recital. Don’t worry: we make our recitals low-pressure, fun, and totally free for families! It’s all about celebrating the community we’ve built here in Holland.
