Finding Your Rhythm: The Best Starter Acoustic Guitars for Adults

So, you’ve finally decided to pull the trigger and learn the guitar. That is awesome! Whether you’ve been dreaming of strumming around a bonfire at Tunnel Park or finally playing your favorite classic rock hits, there is no better time to start than right now. Music is a lifelong gift, and as an adult, you have the focus and passion to make incredible progress quickly.
But before you can start shredding, you need the right tool for the job. Walking into guitar stores can be a little overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Do you go for the one that looks the coolest? The most expensive? The one the guy in the store recommends?
At Avalon Music Academy of Holland, we’ve seen thousands of students start their journey since 2004. We know exactly which guitars help beginners succeed and which ones end up collecting dust in the closet. Let’s break down how to find the perfect starter acoustic guitar so you can get playing today!

What to Look for in Your First Acoustic Guitar
When you’re browsing, you want to keep three big things in mind: Size, Action, and Sound.
1. The Right Size for Your Frame
Not all acoustic guitars are shaped the same!
  • Dreadnought: This is the classic, large-bodied guitar you see most often. It’s loud and punchy. It’s great for most adults, but if you have a smaller frame, it might feel a bit like you’re hugging a refrigerator.
  • Concert or Auditorium: These have a "pinched" waist and a slightly smaller body. They are incredibly comfortable for sitting down and practicing for long periods: perfect for those first few months of lessons!
2. "Action" is Everything
"Action" refers to the height of the strings from the fretboard. If the strings are too high, you have to press down really hard to get a clear note. This leads to sore fingers and frustration! You want a guitar with "low action" that feels easy to play right out of the box.
3. Solid Top vs. Laminate
If your budget allows, look for a guitar with a "Solid Top." This means the front of the guitar is a single piece of wood, which vibrates better and sounds richer as it ages. Laminate tops are cheaper but don't have the same "soul" as a solid wood top.

Top Recommendations for Adult Beginners in 2026
You can’t go wrong with the classics. If you want a guitar that will last you through your first few years of guitar lessons, these are our top two picks:
The All-Around Champ: Yamaha FG800
The Yamaha FG800 is arguably the most recommended beginner guitar in the world for a reason. It features a solid spruce top, which gives it a bright, punchy sound that competes with guitars twice its price. It’s a full-sized dreadnought, so it’s perfect for adults who want that big, classic acoustic sound. It’s sturdy, stays in tune, and looks professional. This is the "gold standard" for adult starters!
The Comfort King: Fender CD-60S
If you find the Yamaha a bit too bulky, the Fender CD-60S is a fantastic alternative. Fender is a legendary name in music, and this model offers a "Easy-to-Play" neck shape with rolled fretboard edges. This makes it much gentler on your hands as you're learning those first chords. It also features a solid top, ensuring you get a great tone every time you strum.
