Drums vs. Video Games: How Learning Rhythms Actually Builds Focus for Holland Kids

If you live in Holland, you know the look. It’s that vacant, slightly glazed-over expression our kids get when they’re five levels deep into a battle royale or a high-speed racing game. Their thumbs are moving at the speed of light, their heart rates are up, and they are completely "in the zone." As parents, we often look at that and think, “If only they could apply that level of focus to their math homework or cleaning their room!”
The truth is, video games are designed to capture focus, but they don't always teach how to build it for the real world. That’s where the drums come in. At Avalon Music Academy of Holland, we’ve spent over 20 years watching kids take that "gamer energy" and channel it into something that builds genuine, long-term discipline, coordination, and mental clarity.
So, if you’re tired of the blue light glow and want to see your child develop a skill that actually translates to better school performance, let’s talk about why the drum throne beats the gaming chair every single time!
The Dopamine Loop: Virtual vs. Physical RealityVideo games are masters of the "short-term reward." You hit a button, you get a point, a flashy light goes off, and your brain gets a hit of dopamine. It’s addictive because it’s easy. Drumming, on the other hand, is a master of the "earned reward."
When a student finally nails a complex syncopated beat after three weeks of practice, that sense of accomplishment is massive. It’s a physical, tactile victory that they can hear and feel in their bones. This type of reward builds resilience. Instead of just hitting "respawn" when things get tough, drum students learn to slow down, analyze the problem, and work through it.
At Avalon, our instructors are experts at keeping this process fun. We know that if it feels like a chore, they’ll go right back to the console. That’s why we focus on songs they actually like, making the "leveling up" process in music just as exciting as any RPG.

Four-Limb Independence: The Ultimate Brain WorkoutIn most video games, you’re using your thumbs and maybe a couple of fingers. In drumming, you are using everything. Your right hand is keeping the pulse on the hi-hat, your left hand is hitting the snare on the 2 and 4, your right foot is working the bass drum pedal, and your left foot is controlling the hi-hat tension.
This is called four-limb independence, and it is one of the most complex tasks you can ask a human brain to perform. Research shows that this kind of rhythmic training builds dense neural connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
For Holland kids, this translates to:
  • Enhanced Spatial Awareness: Understanding how their body moves in space.
  • Improved Multi-tasking: The ability to track multiple streams of information at once (great for staying organized at school!).
  • Physical Coordination: Many of our drum students find they become better athletes because their timing and limb control have been sharpened on the kit.

Predictive Timing: The Secret to Better Grades?Believe it or not, there is a direct link between a child’s ability to keep a steady beat and their literacy and math skills. This is based on something called predictive timing.
When a child plays the drums, they aren't just reacting to a sound; they are predicting when the next beat needs to happen and preparing their body to execute it. Studies have shown that children with strong rhythmic skills often have better "top-down" attentional control. This means they are better at filtering out distractions: like a noisy classroom or a buzzing phone: and staying focused on the task at hand.
When your child spends 30 minutes a day practicing a rhythm, they are literally training their brain to pay attention. It’s the ultimate antidote to the "scroll culture" that shortened attention spans. At Avalon Music Academy of Holland, we’ve heard countless testimonials from parents who noticed their child’s grades and focus improved after just a few months of lessons.
No Kit? No Problem! We’ve Got You CoveredOne of the biggest hesitations parents have about drum lessons is the "gear factor." You’re probably thinking: “I don't want to spend $600 on a drum set that might end up as a very expensive laundry rack if they quit in two weeks.”
We hear you! That’s why we’ve made starting as easy as possible. Every one of our drum rooms is equipped with professional-grade drum kits. Your child gets to play on the real deal from day one, and you don’t have to buy a single thing to get started.
In fact, for the first few months, a student really only needs a pair of sticks and a practice pad (which is much quieter than a full kit!). We want to make sure your child loves the drums before you ever have to worry about where a full set will fit in your house.

Why Avalon is the Right Beat for Your FamilyWe’ve been part of the Holland community for over 20 years. In that time, we’ve learned that the secret to a great music education isn’t just about the notes: it’s about the relationship between the student and the teacher.
  • Qualified, Passionate Instructors: Our drum teachers aren’t just "people who play drums." They are professional educators who know how to break down complex rhythms into bite-sized pieces that kids can actually understand.
  • Tailored Lessons: We don't use a "one size fits all" book. Whether your kid wants to play jazz, rock, or heavy metal, we tailor the curriculum to their interests.
  • A Proven Track Record: Since 2004, we’ve helped thousands of students find their voice (and their rhythm). We are the largest family-oriented music community in the area, and we take joy in every student's progress!

Ready to Trade the Controller for Sticks? We aren't saying video games have to go away entirely: we just think the drums offer a "power-up" that a console simply can't match. Drumming builds real-world focus, physical discipline, and a lifelong love for creativity. Plus, it’s a lot harder to be "bored" when you’re the heartbeat of a band!
Ready to start? You have nothing to lose! We make registration parent-friendly and easy. Our staff is passionate about music and ready to help you find the perfect time slot for your busy schedule.
Don't let your child’s potential stay trapped behind a screen. Let’s get them behind a drum kit and watch them shine.
