Counting Beats and Calculating Success: The Link Between Music and Math

Have you ever watched your child sit at a piano or pick up a pair of drumsticks and wondered what’s actually happening inside their head? As they count "one-and-two-and," they aren’t just making noise: they are performing complex calculations at lightning speed!
Here at Avalon Music Academy of Holland, we’ve spent over 20 years watching students transform. Whether they are coming in for piano lessons in Holland, MI, or trying out voice lessons in Michigan, we see the same thing every time: music doesn’t just make you a better artist; it makes you a sharper thinker.
If you’ve been looking for a way to give your child an academic edge while having a total blast, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s dive into why music is essentially "math in motion" and how our music academy in Michigan helps bridge that gap!
The Rhythm of Numbers: Fractions in ActionThink about the last time you heard a catchy beat. You probably tapped your foot along without thinking. But behind that toe-tapping rhythm is a world of fractions and division.
When a student looks at a sheet of music, they see a time signature. Whether it’s a standard 4/4 or a waltzy 3/4, that symbol is a mathematical instruction. It tells the musician how to divide time. A "whole note" is exactly what it sounds like: a whole unit. From there, we divide it into half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes.

For a young student struggling with fractions in a textbook, music provides a physical, audible way to understand how parts make up a whole. When they play a measure of music, they are literally solving an equation to ensure all the notes add up perfectly to fill the bar. This is why we often say that drum lessons are secretly a masterclass in division! You can check out our drum lessons here to see how we get those rhythms moving.
The "Full-Brain Workout": The Music AdvantageWe are huge fans of Dr. Anita Collins and her groundbreaking work in "The Music Advantage." She describes music as a "full-brain workout." While most activities engage specific parts of the brain, playing an instrument is like a fireworks display in the mind.
Bridging the Creative and the LogicalThe human brain is divided into two hemispheres: the left (logical, mathematical, linguistic) and the right (creative, intuitive, emotional). Usually, these two sides work somewhat independently. However, music acts as a bridge.
When you take piano lessons in Holland, MI, your left brain is busy deciphering the notes and keeping the mathematical rhythm, while your right brain is focusing on the emotional "feel" and melody of the piece. This constant cross-talk strengthens the corpus callosum: the bridge between the two halves.
Why does this matter for math? Because high-level mathematics isn't just about memorizing formulas; it’s about creative problem-solving. By training the brain to bridge logic and creativity through music, students become better at visualizing complex mathematical problems and finding innovative solutions.
Pattern Recognition: The Secret Language of SuccessIf you ask any mathematician what their job really is, they’ll tell you: finding patterns.
Music is built on patterns. Scales, chords, and song structures (like Verse-Chorus-Verse) are all repeating sequences. When a student learns a scale, they are learning a mathematical interval pattern. When they learn a chord progression, they are learning how sets of numbers (the notes) relate to one another in space.

Research shows that children with musical training have superior spatial-temporal reasoning. This is the ability to visualize how objects fit together in space and time. It’s the exact same skill you need for geometry, engineering, and advanced calculus! By identifying patterns in a melody, our students are accidentally training their brains to identify patterns in a math exam.
Why Avalon Music Academy is the Right Choice for Your FamilyWe know there are several music schools in Holland, but we pride ourselves on being a cut above the rest. Our owner, Rich Burkholder, has built a community that is all about the student’s success: both on and off the stage.
Here is what sets us apart:
  • Qualified, Passionate Teachers: Our instructors aren't just great players; they are expert educators who know how to make these "math-music" connections click for kids of all ages.
  • High-Tech Lesson Rooms: We believe in using the best tools available. Our rooms are equipped with modern technology to help students record, playback, and analyze their progress.
  • 20+ Years of History: We’ve been a staple in the Holland community for over two decades. We’ve seen students go from their first "Twinkle Twinkle" to earning college scholarships.
  • Month-to-Month Flexibility: We don’t believe in trapping families into long-term contracts. We want you to stay because you love it, not because you’re forced to! Our month-to-month lessons keep things stress-free for busy parents.
Whether you're interested in string lessons or guitar lessons, we provide a supportive environment where your child can thrive.
Real Results: The "Music Boost" is RealThe data doesn't lie! Studies have shown that students who participate in high-quality music programs consistently score higher on standardized tests, particularly in math and science. In fact, some studies show that students listening to or playing music while working can improve math performance by up to 40%!

At Avalon, we see this every day. We hear from parents all the time who say, "Ever since Joey started piano lessons, his focus in school has skyrocketed!" This isn't a coincidence. Music requires a high level of executive function: the ability to focus, remember instructions, and multitask. These are the "muscles" of the brain, and music is the gym.
