5 Guitar Riffs Every Holland Student Should Master before the first summer BBQ
We are officially creeping up on that glorious West Michigan window where the weather shifts from "Is it ever going to stop snowing?" to "Pass me another burger." Summer in Holland, Michigan, is legendary. Between the trips to Tunnel Park, the sunset walks at Big Red, and the endless rotation of backyard BBQs, there is a certain magic in the air. But you know what makes those summer nights even better? Music. There’s always that moment at a BBQ when someone pulls a dusty acoustic guitar out of a case. The crowd goes quiet, the fire pit is crackling, and everyone looks toward the person holding the instrument. If that person is you, do you want to play a hesitant "C major scale," or do you want to drop a riff so iconic that people stop mid-bite of their bratwurst to cheer? At Avalon Music Academy of Holland, we believe in getting you "BBQ-ready." Whether you are a total beginner or you’ve been noodling around on your own for years, mastering a few key riffs is the fastest way to build confidence and have a blast with your friends and family. Here are the 5 guitar riffs every Holland student should master before the first charcoal is lit this summer. 1. The "Forbidden" Classic: "Smoke on the Water" by Deep PurpleLet’s get the elephant out of the room. Every guitar shop employee in history has heard this riff ten thousand times, but there is a reason for that: it’s awesome. It is the ultimate "rite of passage" for guitar players. When you play those first four notes, everyone within a three-block radius of your Holland neighborhood will know exactly what’s happening. Why it’s perfect for the BBQ: It’s recognizable from the very first second. Plus, it’s a great way to practice double stops (playing two strings at once). Our guitar instructors can show you the "pro" way to play it, using your fingers to pluck the strings instead of just a pick, to give it that authentic Richie Blackmore snap. The Avalon Tip: Don't play it with just one finger on the low E string! Come into our Holland lesson rooms, and we’ll show you how to use fourth chords to make it sound thick, heavy, and professional. 2. The Michigan Connection: "Seven Nation Army" by The White StripesWe’re in Michigan, so we have to pay homage to Jack White. This riff is essentially the state’s unofficial anthem. You hear it at Michigan Stadium, you hear it at local high school football games, and you definitely need to play it at your summer party. Why it’s perfect for the BBQ: It’s incredibly simple but sounds massive. Even though it sounds like a bass guitar on the record, it’s played on a semi-hollow body guitar with an octave pedal. On your acoustic or electric guitar at the BBQ, it’s a driving, rhythmic force that gets everyone nodding their heads. The Avalon Tip: This riff is all about timing and slides. If you’re playing it on an electric guitar in one of our professionally equipped rooms, we can help you dial in that crunchy tone using our top-tier amps. If you’re on an acoustic, we’ll teach you how to emphasize the "thump" to mimic the bass vibe. 3. The Groove Master: "Sunshine of Your Love" by CreamIf you want to show off a little bit of "cool factor," Eric Clapton’s classic riff is the way to go. It’s got a bluesy, syncopated feel that sounds a bit more sophisticated than your standard beginner riffs. Why it’s perfect for the BBQ: It has a "swing" to it. While the kids are running through the sprinklers, you can provide a laid-back, groovy soundtrack. It’s a great riff for practicing your blues scale and getting a feel for moving across different strings. The Avalon Tip: The "secret sauce" to this riff is the slight vibrato on the notes and the way you hit the turnaround. Our teachers at Avalon Music Academy of Holland love breaking down these classic blues-rock hits because they teach fundamental techniques that apply to almost every other genre. 4. The Energy Booster: "Back in Black" by AC/DCIf the party is starting to lag and people are looking for a second wind, it’s time to break out the Angus Young. "Back in Black" is the gold standard for rock guitar. It’s punchy, it’s aggressive, and it’s pure fun. Why it’s perfect for the BBQ: It’s a masterclass in power chords and silence. The "space" between the chords is just as important as the notes themselves. When you hit those three big chords (E, D, and A), you’re making a statement. The Avalon Tip: The little "lick" at the end of the chord progression is where most students get tripped up. It involves some minor pentatonic pulling-off and a tricky little chromatic climb. Don't sweat it! We’ll do the work for you by breaking it down into bite-sized pieces during your lessons so you can play it at full speed by the time July 4th rolls around. 5. The "Oh Wow, You Can Really Play": "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' RosesOkay, this is the "boss level" riff for our Holland students. If you pull this off at a BBQ, you aren't just "the person who brought a guitar", you’re the entertainment for the night. Why it’s perfect for the BBQ: It’s a beautiful, melodic loop that captures everyone's attention immediately. It’s bright, it’s summer-y, and it sounds much harder than it actually is once you understand the "pattern." The Avalon Tip: This riff is all about string skipping. It’s a workout for your picking hand! Our Holland studio is the perfect place to master this because we use professional equipment that lets you hear every single note clearly. We’ll help you build the finger strength and dexterity needed to keep that loop going without your hand cramping up before the s'mores are ready.
